Summer Conference

Whether you’re new or have been a local president for a couple of years, this four-day learning opportunity is for you. There will be topics of importance to all newer presidents, but we’ll also have break-out sessions tailored to individual experience levels, needs, and prior training experience. You’ll interact with peers and exchange ideas regarding successes, problems, programs, and member engagement. The sessions will be led by other local presidents who can share their experiences and best practices – everything you need to succeed as a local leader.

This program will teach members how to work with other members to create bottom-up activism and help make their local associations powerful and effective organizations. All members who are interested in engaging more actively in their union are welcome to attend-- whether you’ve been a member for one year or 20 years. The program is designed to help participants understand the fundamentals of outreach, recruitment, involvement, strategy, decision-making and planning of direct-action strategies for empowerment of MTA locals. Three major themes will resonate throughout the training: assessment of the balance of power; how to bring people together around commonly felt problems; and designing and carrying out action plans to solve problems.

This program is ideal for members in their first five years of practice. As a participant, you will learn about the union at the local, state and national levels. You will also learn how to become involved in your local association's advocacy for educators and students. Participants can also round out their conference attendance with professional development and union skills workshops. This program provides an excellent opportunity to collaborate with, learn from and socialize with MTA members from across the state. Many former participants have become leaders within their locals and the MTA.

Engaging more members in the bargaining process with   expanded bargaining teams has proven to be one of the most important   strategies to build our power and transform our contracts. This workshop will   allow participants to hear from locals and members who have experience with   this process. What is expanded bargaining? What are the legal parameters? How   do you deal with employer resistance? How can you plan for and set the   process up in a way that will be both meaningful and successful? We will   tackle all these questions and more. This workshop counts as 1 elective in   the MTA Bargaining Certificate program.
